track for windham

Support a track for our community!
Please join the WHS Boosters for a track at Windham High School. WHS is the only Division I or Division II school in New Hampshire without a track or without access to one in their town. We are proposing a track be built at the high school. What we “need” and what we “want” may be different for various stakeholders, but we’ve decided to focus on what we need. The overwhelming need is simply to get a functioning track for students and our community. The gap between need and want is what has derailed past efforts to get this done and finally ensure the safety of our athletes and their basic ability to compete. Our proposal is to build a track, a facility to store equipment, and a grass field in the middle for field events, that’s it. A relatively small investment in a facility like this will provide a huge boost for our student athletes and the larger community!

February 8, 2026 update
On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Windham will hold town elections. For those who have been working to secure a track for Windham High School, it’s a big day. The matter will finally be put to a vote, and it will require a three-fifths majority in favor of Warrant Article #2 for the track to finally become a reality.

We need every “Yes” vote possible to ensure success. So, for track supporters with family at college or who will be away on March 10, here is how to obtain an absentee ballot. ALL FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE VOTER ALONG WITH A COPY OF THEIR DRIVERS LICENSE OR OFFICIAL STATE ID. Only the voter, with proper ID, can request an absentee ballot. YOU MUST BE A REGISTERED VOTER TO REQUEST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT.

Detailed instructions for requesting an absentee ballot can be found here.

Here is the short version (assuming the voter is already away with no ability to apply in person at the Town Clerk’s Office at Town Hall):

Step 1: Fill out a request form You can get a copy of the form online here. It’s also available at the link above. You can fill out all the information on the two-page application electronically except the signature. Print the completed document out and sign.

Step 2: Return the application to the Town Clerk’s Office You can return the completed form three ways: mail it back (though time is running short for that), fax it or scan and email.
Email: If you use email, scan the signed and completed form and attach it, along with a photo or a scanned copy of your ID, and send to [email protected]
Fax: Fax the signed and completed form and a copy of your ID to 603-965-1275
Mail: Mail the signed and completed form and a copy of your ID to:
              Town Clerk
              3 N Lowell Road
              Windham, NH 03087

Step 3: VOTE!!! You can send in your application any time. The Town Clerk’s office expects to begin mailing absentee ballots by Friday, Feb. 6. Once you receive your absentee ballot in the mail, VOTE AND MAIL YOUR BALLOT BACK IMMEDIATELY! Follow the included instructions to the letter or it’s possible your vote will not count.
The deadline for acceptance of absentee ballots is 5 pm on Election Day. But we want to make sure your voice is heard. Don’t delay!

If you have any questions, call the Town Clerk’s Office at 603-434-5075. They were super helpful to me putting this together and cheerfully answered all of my questions.

February 1, 2026 update
A Citizen’s Petition was successfully approved by the School Board by a vote of 4-1.  The warrant articles will be presented at the Deliberative Session on 2/2/26.

A new bid was accepted by the School Board from R.A.D. Sports, a firm with extensive track and field construction experience.  The winning bid was $4,883,040.

If we secure 60% of yes votes on March 10th we will have our long-awaited track!  PLEASE vote on March 10th.  Literally every vote is needed to get this passed!  Talk to neighbors, friends, and family.  Get the Vote Out on March 10th!

December 21, 2025 update
At the 11/18 School Board meeting, it was discovered that one of the two original bidders had to be disqualified. The School Board decided that more than one bidder was necessary to move forward with any decision.  Tighe & Bond has put to project out to bid once again with all bids being due on January 16th.  Karen Murphy is putting together a Citizen Petition with the required 25 signatures so this can be added to the March Ballot.  Some important dates:

    1/9 Citizen’s Petition due
    1/13 Bond Hearing
1/16 Bids to be received and presented to the School Board
2/9 Deliberative session (need town representation!!!)

Provided we are successful with the above, voting day would be Tuesday March 10th!  The representation of citizens in support of the track at the 11/18 School Board meeting was both impressive and inspiring.  It continues to underscore the importance of this effort and the amount of support we have.  The most important thing is continuing that support and voting!!

November 14, 2025 update
On Tuesday, November 18th at 7pm at Golden Brook School, the School Board will be discussing which Warrant Articles they will be supporting.  Please come and show support for our track effort so we can have this on the ballot in March 2026.  We believe there is a need and support for a track in our town, and we’d love for the townspeople to get the opportunity to vote on it!

Please take this two-question survey so we can begin to get data on what we believe to be true – that the majority of people in our town feel this important to keep our runners safe.

October 26, 2025 update
In September, the School Board received two bids to build the track.  While a specific vendor has not been chosen at this time, it has been determined that the cost will be approximately $6 million.  The Windham High Boosters are soliciting corporate and individual pledges from $10,000 to $2 million dollars to help defer that cost to the taxpayers.  Please see our fundraising flyer. At this point, we are only taking pledges since we are not guaranteed to be on the Spring ballot for the taxpayers.  School Board support may depend on how much we can defer this cost.

If you are passionate about securing a safe place for the community to run, please consider making a pledge today.  Once we are confident that this will be on the ballot, we will open it up for donations of any amount.  The reason for the delineation is that we can refund the larger amounts if we are not successful either getting this on the ballot or getting it passed by the voters.  The smaller donations will be made to the Boosters track program and may not be refundable.

August 16, 2025 update
Tighe & Bond has completed the design and bid documents and is currently soliciting
bids via their website. Project Details

The bids are due September 4th and will be reviewed by the School Board and the
District at that time. A Booster Track Fundraising Committee is meeting on August 21st
to discuss fundraising strategies so we can be ready to begin if and when a viable bid is
accepted. The goal is to fundraise to reduce the amount we would need the taxpayers
to vote on in March. The plan is to incorporate a combination of grants, community
contributions, individual donations, and corporate sponsorship with naming rights etc.
More information will be available after the bid period is complete.

July 26, 2025 update
We continue to meet with Tighe & Bond to finalize the bid drawings. They have
indicated that they do not anticipate issues with the vernal pools. We expect to have
finalized drawings to approve the week of August 4th. They should be sent to bid in
August with bids expected back in September. We are forming a Fundraising
subcommittee which will meet in August to further develop the fundraising plan to
include possible grants, community contributions, individual donations, corporate
sponsorships with naming rights etc. We are certainly open to ideas! You will be
hearing more about those activities in the fall. Any questions or suggestions, please
reach out to Karen Murphy at [email protected].

June 10, 2025 update
At the meeting with Tighe & Bond on June 5, 2025, the following was discussed. The
cut/fill analysis has been completed. They are continuing work on the wet land analysis
and those results are expected this month. We will be meeting again in July. The plan
is on schedule to be delivered to the School District in July for any changes or edits.
The final plan is on schedule to be sent out for bids in August.

May 7, 2025 update
Thank you for visiting our website for our most recent updates! Work continues to
happen behind the scenes and it is our mission to keep the Community informed.
Tighe & Bond has completed the assessment of the wetlands. The good news is the
wetlands haven’t gotten bigger since our last assessment. They are currently assessing
the vernal pools. Next will be the groundwork to determine whether we build up from
the significant amount of ledge found on the site or if we consider blasting.

Tighe & Bond expects to have the plan done by July 2025 which will then be put out to
bid to three different contractors. We expect those bids to be submitted back to the
School District by the beginning of September. This means we will have the amount it
will cost to construct the track.

After that amount is determined, the Boosters along with the Athletic Director and the
School Board will assess the best ways to fund. We will be looking for Corporate
sponsors, Public and Private Grants, Community Contributions, and/or taxpayer
approval if necessary. Once we know more about how much it will cost, we can tailor
our funding plan.

Please sign up to receive updates and submit comments.
Please note that we will do our best to update you with the information that we have.
Please understand that plans and timelines are subject to change.
